Mech Every Day Sunday Special #7: Updates and Road Map!

Image
Today marks eight weeks since I started this project, and aside from the first couple of weekends I've posted a painted BattleTech miniature every single day. Things are going very well behind the scenes. Thanks to some donations I've acquired more miniatures and paints, and look to be on-track to finish out the year. As for 2026, we'll see if I continue. I'd like to branch out into the old lead and pewter pieces, maybe hunt down some of the old large-scale models or MechWarrior: Dark Age pieces, but that gets very expensive, very quickly. It's only February 2025 as I write this, so it's too early to say for sure. Moving forward this year, I'm going to be revisiting some unit schemes I've already done to fill out company and Trinary-sized forces. I'm finally getting into mercenary unit schemes starting tomorrow, and I've got more Clans lined up. I'll also be finishing the various Bounty Hunter incarnations this month and hope to have a big ...

Mech Every Day Force Saturday #8: Star League Defense Force Assault Lance

Image
The first Star League was the largest political entity ever created in the history of mankind, and its army - the Star League Defense Force, or SLDF - was the most-powerful fighting force ever seen. At its height, just before the Amaris Civil War, the SLDF boasted thousands of regiments filled with cutting-edge BattleMechs. The naval component of the SLDF had over a thousand active WarShips. It cannot be overstated just how huge and powerful the Star League and the SLDF were. Even if Alaric Ward succeeds in his plan to conquer the Inner Sphere, the loss of so many planets, factories, and shipyards makes it highly unlikely that such a golden age could ever return. Only time will tell. Unlike the armies of the Succession Wars, the SLDF tended not to mix different types of 'Mech in any formation smaller than a battalion. Most companies (12 'Mechs) were made up of a single model of BattleMech or combat vehicle, simplifying tactics and logistics. At the command level, and for specia...

Mech Every Day Force Saturday #7: Wolf Empire Lupus Galaxy Star

Image
It feels a bit weird to say this about a violent warrior society that conquered Earth itself, but Clan Wolf has kind of been through a lot. I'm kind of putting the cart before the horse here, as I've got a Clan Invasion-era Clan Wolf Star coming up, but I wanted to do this scheme first. So. For reasons that make a lot of sense in-universe and weren't mostly about introducing new factions in MechWarrior: Dark Age, Clan Wolf allied with the Lyran Commonwealth and moved their entire touman  to the border with the Free Worlds League. Khan Alaric saw this as way to pursue his ultimate goal of taking Terra. The Mariks had no chance against the technologically advanced and numerous Wolf forces. Alaric carved a huge chunk out of the League and then, using the excuse that the Lyrans had been mistreating Wolf's lower castes, also assaulted the Commonwealth. Alaric went so far as to attack Tharkad and execute the Archon, declaring himself the proper ruler of the Lyran Commonweal...

Mech Every Day Sunday Special #6: Continuity and Me

Image
The above image, from BattleTech's Legends I sourcebook, nearly gave me a (second) heart attack. Let me explain. So far, all of the miniatures I've painted for Mech Every Day (or #MechADay on Bluesky) have been, give or take, canonical unit or individual liveries. I take a few liberties in my interpretations of those schemes, mostly to reflect my own preferences and skills, but I do try to keep them mostly in accordance with BattleTech's lore. That holds true for this week's miniatures: I loved the look of this Crusader  and the Goliath  from Legends II. Knowing that Galen Cox was Victor Steiner-Davion's aide and that they fought alongside Kai Allard-Liao in Yen-lo-Wang,  this week's theme was obvious: the Tenth Lyran Guards RCT. (Technically Warren Hestrus was in the 26th Lyran Guards, but the scheme is the same.) But when I went to double-check everything for yesterday's Force Saturday post, I almost panicked. Victor and Galen were assigned to the 12th D...

Mech Every Day Force Saturday #6: Tenth Lyran Guards Command Lance

Image
The Lyran Commonwealth, also known as House Steiner, was one of the last Great Houses to form. Its three constituent proto-states were all heavily focused on interstellar trade. The Commonwealth has thus always been a rich nation, but this hasn't translated to battlefield excellence. Steiner's armies are, on average, the heaviest of all the Successor States, but this mainly makes them cumbersome and slow - though if a foe does find themselves out-maneuvered, their destruction at the guns of so many heavy and assault 'Mechs is all but assured. It should noted that Lyran "Social Generals" - entitled rich jerks who purchase their ranks - are well-known at being experts of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. The Lyran Guards regiments are among the realm's backbone units, alongside the Lyran Regulars. In 3049, several of these regiments were stationed along the border of the Free Rasalhague Republic in a show of détente which the Draconis Combine mirrored...
